What is the Dreadnought?
The Dreadnought Medical Service aims to give working seafarers priority medical treatment. The idea is to get you back working at sea as soon as possible.
Who can use the Dreadnought?
Working seafarers -
- Merchant seafarers, fishermen, pilots and tugboat men
- Merchant Navy trainees
- Shipping company shore staff, when they’re essential to the function of the fleet
Dependants of working seafarers -
- Wives, husbands or children under 18, when their illness is causing grave concern
Others
- Retired seafarers but not their dependants
- Union officials but not their dependants

How do I use the Dreadnought?
You’ll need a referral from your doctor. The form can be downloaded here.
What if I can’t use public transport or can’t afford the fare?
Patient Transport Services at Guy’s and St Thomas’s may be able to help you. Their phone number is 020 7188 2888.
If they can’t help, you may be able to get some maritime charity help. Please contact us for details.
Can I find somewhere nearby to stay before or after my treatment?
There are some maritime organisations offering cheaper accommodation near the Dreadnought. Contact us for more details.
